Kargil Day 2016: Why is Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrated

Kargil Day is celebrated on 26th July each year as Victory Day. This day is remembered as Kargil Vijay Diwas. On this day in 1999, the Indian military forces defeated the Pakistani forces in the garb of intruders who had captured the high mountain posts of Kargil, overlooking the Srinagar-Leh highway. The Kargil war continued for more than 60 days, causing loss of 400 lives on our side. On this day, each year we pay homage to our Kargil War Heroes who laid their lives to safeguard our land and honour of our country.

Special commemorations take place in the Kargil - Dras sector by the Indian military and in the capital city, New Delhi at the government level. The Prime Minister of our country makes a visit to the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay homage to the soldiers who laid their lives for the country’s honour.

The Indian Army Chief pays tributes to the Kargil War martyrs in the Kargil - Dras sector each year. Besides, all army centres hold events to remember the martyrs of the Kargil war across the nation when the enemy had to withdraw from the battlefield.

State and city level commemorations also take place each year to make us feel proud that our military has time and again defeated India’s perennial enemy Pakistan. This day provides the citizens with another opportunity to pay homage to brave soldiers of our army whose sacrifices made the victory possible. We salute them!
